Wimbledon Embraces Video Challenge Technology in 2025.

Wimbledon tennis court with video review technology

Wimbledon will follow the US and Aussie Opens in utilizing replay technology.

Video review systems are set to arrive at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.

Athletes are granted the ability to question certain rulings made by the chair umpire, mirroring the protocol already in use at both the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

This technology will be operational on Centre Court and the number one court for the duration of the tournament and on the remaining featured courts when they are staging singles matches.

This step follows just a season following the All England Club rolled out electronic line calling, which effectively ended the centuries-old role of line judges.

Reviewable Decisions

Players cannot to challenge the call of the ELC system, but are allowed to request the official to re-examine specific decisions, such as:

  • Whether a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • If a ball made contact with an opponent's racquet or person on the way past.
  • Possible interference end of a point.

Importantly, there is no limit on the amount of reviews a player can initiate.

Practical Application

An illustrative case occurred in a recent tournament last week, where Daniil Medvedev used the review system against his opponent.

Draper conceded it was a difficult situation for the official, but thought his rival had "played the rules effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a video and determined the player was responsible for interference, granting the point to his opponent.

Broader Adoption

Video reviews are not new for Grand Slams. The system was adopted at the American major since 2023 and the Aussie Open this year.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the ATP circuit plans to have the system in place at all of its tournaments.

Further Updates

Another change at Wimbledon 2025 involves the addition of graphical cues on displays to support the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This solves instances where the crowd have occasionally been uncertain whether a shot was in or out.

In other news, with precisely a century of days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have also revealed an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
