No fewer than 13 passengers lose their lives and 98 wounded in train derailment in the nation of Mexico.

A tragic train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the rapidity and management of the country's key public works projects.

The disaster occurred on the Interoceanic Train, a rail link developed to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was designed to establish an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, intended to promote economic development in the area.

“We will thoroughly investigate what caused this tragedy,” stated the head of state.

The leader reported that, of the some 250 passengers on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in serious condition. The president stated plans to go to Oaxaca to meet those involved.

Major Initiative of Past Leadership

The Interoceanic Train was a central infrastructure project of the immediate past president, whose presidency finished the prior year. This project was intimately linked to his administration's developmental agenda for the southern region.

Another ambitious rail project from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the wider plan to stimulate the economic fortunes of a comparatively poorer part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Worries

The construction of both rail lines was managed by the nation's military, marking a dramatic growth of its responsibilities in civilian works. They were executed at an accelerated pace, surpassing forecasts to be partially launched before the end of that presidency.

However, this fast-paced schedule had simultaneously sparked significant questions over safety standards.

  • Sunday's crash was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This involves an prior crash this month when a train smashed into a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen a couple of non-deadly derailments.

Appeals for Investigation and Halt

In the aftermath of the tragedy, the chief of a key rival party called for an urgent pause in the development and management of all similar projects.

This halt was requested while awaiting a thorough independent investigation. The party stated that the situation "requires prompt explanations."

In reply, the president maintained that the train had been operating in complete accordance with all safety requirements. Assurances were given that the government would be "responsible" in both the construction and running of these vital projects.
