British Air Force Typhoon jets have conducted a mission with French warplanes in a combined operation against an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory used by the Daesh militant organization, per a report from the British defence ministry.

The facility, located using reconnaissance, was believed to be containing munitions and bombs, the statement said, and was situated in mountainous terrain just to the north of the historic site of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our aircraft used precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to target a number of entry passages leading to the facility... early reports indicate the target was engaged successfully," the MoD said.

There was no sign of any harm to civilians in the attack conducted Saturday night and each participating jet returned to base without incident, the ministry further stated.

The British jets were assisted by a Voyager tanker plane.

IS - also known as ISIS - enforced extremist governance over parts of Iraq and Syria until 2019.

"This strike underscores the UK's leading role, and resolve to operate in unison with our allies, to stamp out any resurgence of IS and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the Middle East," Britain's Defence Chief the Defence Secretary remarked.

RAF aircraft have carried out overwatch operations over Syria to "forestall any attempted resurgence" of IS following its defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I want to thank every member of our armed forces who took part in this operation for their professionalism and their valour," he added. "They were part of numerous UK service members deployed over Christmas and New Year. This operation, to eliminate terrorist threats who endanger our way of life, highlights how British military are always on standby, throughout the year, ensuring Britain's security domestically and powerful internationally."

Last December, the United States armed forces carried out what it described as a "major assault" against Daesh sites in the country, following an assault claimed the lives of two US servicemembers and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.

The UN reports Daesh still maintains roughly 5-7 thousand fighters in Syria and Iraq.
