The UK and US have announced a important bilateral deal that will guarantee no tariffs on British medicine products going into the American market.

Agreement Details of the Pact

As part of the deal, the UK has committed to boost expenditure on pharmaceuticals through the public health system. This commitment ensures that tariffs on these vital exports will remain at nothing for a duration of three years.

This deal is in response to previous threats to dramatically increase import taxes on patented pharmaceutical imports, with figures floated reaching double the cost.

"This deal with the United Kingdom bolsters the international landscape for cutting-edge drugs and establishes long-overdue equity to U.S.–U.K. medicine commerce," a release noted.

Commercial Importance

Medicines constitute one of the the United Kingdom's most significant export categories to the America, which is easily the primary destination for major British pharmaceutical firms.

Export figures reveal that in the 12 months leading up to the third quarter, the UK sold drugs totaling £11.1bn to the US. This value accounted for a significant portion of British export trade in that span.

"This deal protects work, increases capital expenditure and facilitates the UK to become a international leader for life sciences," the Business and Trade Secretary remarked.

Specific NHS Changes

The deal entails several specific changes from the United Kingdom:

  • Higher Cost Ceiling: The UK will raise the cost ceiling at which it considers new treatments to be unaffordable by twenty-five percent.
  • Boosted Medicine Funding: There is a aim to increase total NHS spending on drugs from 0.3% of the national economy to 0.6 percent over the coming ten years.
  • Refund Ceiling: The percentage pharmaceutical firms must pay back to the NHS to stay within budget will be capped at 15%. Previously, repayments exceeded twenty percent.

Industry Background

The deal follows a long-running tension between the drug companies and the ministers over spending levels and NHS adoption.

These tensions were intensified by claims that US customers were paying a premium for the same drugs than people in the Britain and the EU.

Over the last 18 months, several major drug company projects in the UK have been halted or scrapped, while multi-billion-dollar expansions have been announced toward American operations.

The Science Minister acknowledged that the NHS must spend more on treatments, noting that its expenditure on drugs had declined as a percentage of its overall budget over the previous ten-year period.
